Belief #19. Law of God

The great principles of God’s law are embodied in the Ten Commandments and exemplified in the life of Christ. They express God’s love, will, and purposes concerning human conduct and relationships and are binding upon all people in every age. The Law of God, also known as the Decalogue or Ten Commandments, is a set of ancient moral guidelines found in the Old Testament of the Bible. Displayed on signs or sculptures worldwide, these commandments are divided into two sections: the first four concern our relationship with God, and the last six address our relationship with others.

God's law embodies love, expressing His will and desires for human conduct and relationships. These principles, exemplified by Christ, are binding across all generations and highlight the need for a Saviour through the Holy Spirit.

The Commandments:

  1. No other gods: Worship only God. (Exodus 20:3)
  2. No idols: Avoid idolatry. (Exodus 20:4)
  3. Not taking God's name in vain: Speak of God with reverence. (Exodus 20:7)
  4. Sabbath observance: Keep it holy. (Exodus 20:8)
  5. Honor parents: Respect them. (Exodus 20:12)
  6. No murder: Preserve life. (Exodus 20:13)
  7. No adultery: Respect marriage vows. (Exodus 20:14)
  8. No stealing: Respect others' property. (Exodus 20:15)
  9. No false witness: Be truthful. (Exodus 20:16)
  10. No coveting: Appreciate what you have. (Exodus 20:17)

Purpose and Role:

God's law protects us from sin's pain and encourages righteousness. It reveals His character and love, valuing life, relationships, and personal devotion. While the law remains unchanging, it points out sin but only Jesus offers salvation. Keeping the commandments is an expression of love for God, and through His grace, we are saved.

The Law and Jesus:

Jesus, as the Word made flesh, perfectly lived God's law, serving as our example. His life illustrates obedience to God's commands, strengthening our Christian witness and relationship with God. The law directs us towards a life of freedom in Christ, not salvation by works.
