Lesson 5: Passover

Memory Text:
“ ‘And it shall be, when your children say to you, “What do you mean by this service?” that you shall say, “It is the Passover sacrifice of the Lord, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt when He struck the Egyptians and delivered our households” ’ ” (Exodus 12:26, 27, NKJV).

Exodus 12:26-27 – The Passover commemorates God's deliverance and requires generational teaching.
Core Theme: Passover as a divine rescue mission and prophetic symbol of Christ’s redemption.

Key Insights by Day:

  1. Sunday: Final Plague’s Warning (Exodus 11)
    • The 10th plague (death of firstborns) targeted Egypt’s systemic injustice and idolatry. Moses’ anger (v.8) reflected divine frustration with hardened hearts.
    • Divine Balance: God’s justice (Jeremiah 9:24) and mercy (James 2:13) coexist; humility aligns us with His will (Micah 6:8).
  2. Monday: Preparing for Deliverance (Exodus 12:1–20)
    • Passover rituals: Selecting an unblemished lamb, applying blood to doorposts, removing leaven.
    • Purpose: To forge national identity, renew faith annually, and foreshadow Christ’s sacrifice (John 1:29).
  3. Tuesday: Symbolism of Pesach (Exodus 12:17–23; 1 Corinthians 5:6–8)
    • Blood: Protection through sacrifice (Christ’s atonement).
    • Hyssop: Cleansing from sin (Psalm 51:7).
    • Unleavened bread: Urgent holiness (yeast = sin’s corruption).
    • Fulfillment: Christ is the sinless Lamb (1 Corinthians 5:7).
  4. Wednesday: Generational Faith (Exodus 12:24–28)
    • Passover’s repetition ensured youth understood God’s power.
    • Principle: Personal testimonies (Psalm 145:4) cement faith across generations.
  5. Thursday: Judgment and Mercy (Exodus 12:29–30; Hebrews 11:28)
    • The plague exposed sin’s collateral damage but spared the obedient.
    • Contrast: Egypt’s false gods failed; Yahweh proved sovereign over life/death.

Final Thoughts (Friday):

  • Prophecy Fulfilled: Passover’s blood prefigured Christ’s crucifixion during Passion Week (John 1:29).
  • Eternal Transition: Jesus replaced the lamb sacrifice with Communion (unleavened bread/unfermented wine), signifying His "once for all" atonement (Romans 6:10).
  • Present Application: Believers live "covered by the blood" of Christ, liberated from sin’s bondage and ready for Christ’s return.
"Christ our Passover was sacrificed for us" (1 Corinthians 5:7). The Exodus lamb pointed to Calvary’s Lamb, whose blood delivers us from eternal death.
