Lesson 7: The Bread and Water of Life

Memory Text:
“And the Lord said to Moses, ‘How long do you refuse to keep My commandments and My laws? See! For the Lord has given you the Sabbath; therefore He gives you on the sixth day bread for two days. Let every man remain in his place; let no man go out of his place on the seventh day.’ So the people rested on the seventh day” (Exodus 16:28–30, NKJV).

Exodus 16:28-30 – God provides Sabbath rest and daily bread to teach obedience.
Core Theme: Wilderness miracles as object lessons for spiritual dependence on Christ, the true Bread and Water of Life.

Key Insights by Day:

  1. Sunday: Bitter Waters Made Sweet (Exodus 15:22–27)
    • At Marah ("bitterness"), God purifies undrinkable water through a tree (v. 25), foreshadowing Christ’s cross (Acts 5:30).
    • Promise: Obedience brings divine healing and protection (v. 26).
  2. Monday: Manna and Quail (Exodus 16:1–36)
    • God responds to complaints with:
      • Quail at twilight: Meat for immediate need.
      • Manna: Daily "bread from heaven" (John 6:31) with Sabbath test (gather double on Friday; none spoils).
    • Lesson: Daily dependence on God combats greed and distrust.
  3. Tuesday: Water From the Rock (Exodus 17:1–7)
    • At Rephidim, Moses strikes the rock at Horeb; water gushes forth.
    • Symbolism: Christ is the spiritual Rock (1 Corinthians 10:4; Psalm 78:15–16), struck once for our salvation (John 19:34).
  4. Wednesday: Jethro’s Wisdom (Exodus 18:1–27)
    • Moses’ father-in-law advises delegating leadership: appoint judges over thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens.
    • Principle: Humility to accept counsel prevents burnout and fosters community (Proverbs 11:14).
  5. Thursday: Christ the True Sustenance (John 4:9–14; 6:31–35)
    • Living Water: Jesus offers eternal satisfaction to the Samaritan woman.
    • Bread of Life: Declares Himself superior to manna, feeding spiritual hunger.
    • Call: Trust Christ’s daily provision for body and soul.

Final Thoughts (Friday):

  • Victory Through Dependence: The Amalekite battle (Exodus 17:8–16) illustrates triumph when Moses’ upraised hands (symbolizing prayer) are supported (v. 12).
  • Enduring Lessons:
    • Physical hunger/thirst point to deeper spiritual needs.
    • God trains us through trials to rely wholly on Him (1 Corinthians 10:11).
    • Christ is our eternal Manna and Rock—"Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty" (John 6:35).
"The wilderness teaches: Our daily bread points to the Eternal Bread; the Rock’s water flows to eternal life. In Christ, scarcity becomes abundance."

We had a good Sabbath School study on this, something the SDA do not know is manna was literal faith demonstrating literal faith to Israel, but they hated this light bread, and thus hated doing genuine faith. They wanted to mix faith with human powers, something the Bible teaches is nothing in the eyes of the Lord.

"The wilderness teaches: Our daily faith comes from the Eternal Bread; the Rock’s water flows to eternal life. In Christ, scarcity becomes abundance."
