SSQ1 2026 - Lesson 4: Unity Through Humility

Philippians 2:2 – “Fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.”
Core Theme: True unity in the church is achieved not by force but by cultivating the self-emptying, humble “mind of Christ,” which actively counters the pride and selfish ambition that are the root of all disunity.

Key Insights by Day:

Sunday: Disunity in Philippi (Philippians 2:1-3)

  • The Philippian church was threatened by “selfish ambition” and “conceit” - the same pride that caused Lucifer’s fall and Eden’s sin.
  • Paul’s Prescription: Unity is fostered through “consolation in Christ,” the “comfort of love,” the “fellowship of the Spirit,” and “affection and mercy.”
  • The Goal: To be “like-minded,” sharing the same love and purpose, which is only possible by sharing the mind of Christ.
Monday: The Source of Unity (Philippians 2:3-4; Ephesians 4:3)
  • Practical unity requires “lowliness of mind,” esteeming others better than ourselves, and looking out for others’ interests.
  • Active Foundation: Unity is a product of the Holy Spirit (“unity of the Spirit”) and is built on “the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God.”
  • Key Practice: Active listening and seeking to understand others’ viewpoints is the first step to overcoming strife and building trust.
Tuesday: Mind Implant or Mind Surgery? (Philippians 2:5; 4:8)
  • Our minds are constantly “programmed” by worldly media and thoughts, which breed disunity. We must choose our teacher: “the spirit of the world” or the Spirit of God.
  • Heart Surgery: We cannot change our own deceitful hearts (Jeremiah 17:9). Only the Holy Spirit, wielding the “sword” of God’s Word, can renew our minds (Romans 12:2).
  • Guarding the Mind: We must intentionally “meditate on” things that are true, noble, just, pure, lovely, and praiseworthy.
Wednesday: The Mind of Christ (Philippians 2:5-8)
  • The supreme model for unity is Christ’s own condescension: though “in the form of God,” He emptied Himself, took the form of a servant, and humbled Himself to death on a cross.
  • The Great Reversal: Christ’s journey from supremacy to servanthood is the exact opposite of Lucifer’s pride and provides the pattern for Christian relationships: “he who humbles himself will be exalted.”
  • Our Response: We cannot add to Christ’s work. Our only adequate response is worship and a willingness to emulate His humility and sacrifice for others.
Thursday: The Mystery of Godliness (Romans 8:3; Hebrews 2:14-18; 4:15)
  • Christ’s incarnation (the eternal God becoming a mortal human) is the profound “mystery of godliness.”
  • The Depth of Condescension: Paul details this in Philippians 2:6-8: from being equal with God, to self-emptying, to humble servanthood, to the ignominious death of the cross.
  • The Purpose: He did this to become “sin for us,” to redeem us, and to be a merciful High Priest who was tempted as we are, yet without sin.
Final Thoughts (Friday):
  • Root Principle: God’s infinite, self-sacrificing love - most fully revealed in Christ’s condescension - is the ultimate source and model for the humility that creates unity.
  • The School of Christ: Our lifelong training is to advance in “meekness and lowliness of mind,” putting our talents to use in service, not self-exaltation.
  • Our Call:
    • Actively reject “selfish ambition or conceit,” the seeds of all disunity.
    • Invite the Holy Spirit to perform “heart surgery” through God’s Word, renewing our minds to have the “mind of Christ.”
    • Emulate Christ’s pattern of humble servanthood in all relationships, esteeming others above ourselves.
    • Make the study of Christ’s redeeming love and humble sacrifice the central theme of life, both now and for eternity.
"Unity is not the absence of difference, but the presence of a common humility. The mind that emptied heaven of its King is the only power that can fill the church with His peace."

Heart Surgery is a wonderful impossible thing we cannot do.

De 10:16 Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart, and be no more stiffnecked.

While it is possible to circumcise penal flesh, it is not possible to circumcise the foreskin of the heart and also live after doing it, so this is a "Faith promise" surgery that God can do.

Sadly Jews, and legalism supporters of God also, do not understand how "faith" actually works in us. Jesus gave them "manna" to eat every day, literal symbols of faith, but Israel loathed this light bread. So Jesus allowed the fiery serpents to come and change their attitudes of gratitude regarding faith in God.

When you experience the second birth - the born again experience - how literal is this ? My answer is literal as the Divine Power of God is literal.

As literal as the removal of the heart foreskin is literal. One must ask first what is this biological membrane a symbol of, and why did Jesus heart membrane literally burst when He died for all sin-offering? EGW calls this an infinite sacrifice is something to think about. Shalom
